My story

Hello!

My name is Meera Maveli. As a dentist trained in India, I know first hand the challenges faced by an international dentist when moving to USA. I started this website/blog to share my story and help other foreign trained dentists find viable options to study or practice in USA. Now that I’m an American Board Certified Periodontist, I feel that I have a different perspective as someone who has gone through all the different phases – exams, applications, interviews, graduation, job hunting, immigration etc.

There are few things worse than moving to a new country and realizing you have to start your professional education/career from scratch! I found myself in that predicament when I got married and moved to the US to live with my husband. My husband, Thomas Maveli, was at Loma Linda University (LLU) undergoing a dual Masters program in Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry. Faced with multiple options in USA, I had to quickly determine my priorities.

  • One, I wanted to complete a Specialty program instead of an Advanced Standing program, even if it limited my practice to certain US states.
  • Two, I was interested in a surgical Specialty, so between Oral Surgery and Periodontics, I decided on Periodontics.
  • Third, since I did not want to be separated from my husband, the only place I wanted to apply to was the LLU Periodontics department.

Once I had come to this understanding, I had to turn the odds in my favour. I joined for a 6 month externship program in the LLU Periodontics department that let me assist the residents and attend all their classes. The faculty were able to see me perform in the exams and take part in journal discussions. I interviewed with the Periodontics Department the same year, but was waitlisted and told to re-apply next year. However, God worked a miracle when one of the selected candidates dropped out and I was offered a position in the program. So my husband and I had the pleasure of graduating together from the same university in 2014!! We both are now American Board Certified Specialists in our respective fields and have settled down in Texas.

foreign trained dentists in USA - Thomas C. Maveli DDS, MS (Prostho), Meera G. Maveli BDS, MS (Perio)

Thomas C. Maveli DDS, MS (Prostho), Meera G. Maveli BDS, MS (Perio)

I have multiple family members and friends who are dentists. Believe it or not but between my husband and I, we have 11 dentists in our families (excluding us)!!. Let’s just say, almost every conversation ends up in dental talk. I get asked constantly about how we made it into US dental programs and are able to practice in the US.

Since I’m currently a stay at home mom, I wanted to start a site to share my experiences and bring all the available resources to one place. The information currently available to foreign trained dentists is so scattered, outdated and sometimes not accurate. And there is so much that people don’t tell you because it’s embarrassing or they think they are a one-of case. That is why this site will have not only blog posts that I use to share pointers but also a resources page with a collection of all the information available on the internet and a forum to discuss specific topics.

To use this site to it’s full potential, I would advise that you subscribe, as well as participate and share your experiences by commenting below each post. I will try my best to reply to your comments/emails and also cater the site to the needs of the audience. Here’s to a great future!!

Please read all the posts on the blog, particularly “the most frequently asked questions” blog post. I am getting the same questions again and again that I will not be replying to. I am maintaining this blog as a help to show people where to start. I get no remuneration or help for my time. Hence I do not take personal calls, requests for consultation or enjoy being harassed at my workplace. Please be respectful of my work life and my personal space. Thank you.

Unfortunately a PhD in the US will not let you practice here as a dentist/Periodontist. You will need to graduate from a CODA approved 2-3yr international DDS/Perio program.

My name is angel , I am a prosthodontist from India I would like to know about the job options after the residency program . Is it better to do a specialist program than DDs ? Because DDS do all prosthodontic work .
What’s the dual master degree mean ? Did your husband already have a DDs before applying for master program .
Which all states do we get to practice after the program ? Most importantly how expensive was the program.?

    Hi, Dr. Meera.

Reading your bio, made me felt so thankful of you that you even thought of blogging it to help others. You might not even have the idea how much a tremendous help it is to finally come across a blog which actually clears doubts, instead of increasing them.

    Huge thanks.

    hi dr. maveli,
read your blog, its very inspiring and informative too.
I am an Indian prosthodontist, worked for 4 years now. I was going through the admission requirements for the same program on LLU page, I saw nbde is only needed for US studies dentist. Does that mean as an international dentist I won’t need this exam scores? I am interested in advance standing program
    kindly help.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

      Hi Swati,
You will need NBDE scores regardless of the program you apply to…some programs may say they don’t need it but even if you get accepted into a program, you will need to pass NBDE’s to apply for licensing exams. So get it out of the way!

      • dr swati joshi asopa says:

        Hi Meera,
thank you for your prompt response, I m already studying and taking part-1 by April, as I’ve heard INBDE is soon taking over. I m planning to apply for DDS & advance learning once I clear part-2 as well. I hope my Indian career experience so far nd future examination results can help me get through the program as I won’t be able to take up anymore future courses to enhance my application due to my age, finance and visa constraints.

        • mudita says:

Hi Dr Swati.. I’m Dr Mudita from India, currently practicing as an endodontist here. I read your comment and since I am in a similar situation right now I’m eager to know a lot more about the DDS program. Did you write your NBDE exams yet?

          • Nancy Bansal says:

Hi, I just wanted to clear your doubts fro INBDE. INBDE will start from August 2020. If you have taken NBDE part1 already then you can give part2 till 2022.

  5. Nerea Robles says:

Hello Dr. Meera! I am Dr. Nerea from Mexico City and I am currently a third year Periodontics resident. I am an American citizen (born in Connecticut) and I am pursuing a dental career in the U.S. I have been doing all the research about the licensure requirements and dental schools and it is such a relief to find your page 🙂 I have some questions:

    – I am still undecided wether to apply to International Programs or to a Periodontics program (I love Perio and I would go for it again), because I am not sure if going for an IDP would allow me to work as a Periodontist and to be Board Certified or if it is mandatory to study Periodontics in the U.S. to be called a Periodontist and be Board Certified even if I have the Periodontics mexican certificate. Also I would like to live in Connecticut, Texas or Washington, so I wouldn’t mind if going for a specialty limits my practice to certain states.
    – In Texas are you still considered a BDS or are you considered a DDS o DMD?
    – What type of financial aid did you request? Since I am an American citizen, I believe I am elegible for a federal loan, but I am kind of worried about the debt I will have at the end of the program I choose. What do you recommend?
    – Did you use any study material for the NBDEs? How hard is it? Any recommendations or sources for study materials?

Thank you very much for this amazing page and all the info you have shared! It has been totally useful for me and I have cleared a lot of doubts.

    ¡Gracias y saludos!

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Hi Nerea, thank you for all the kind words!
      Regarding your questions
      1. I would say apply to Perio programs because you can appear for the American Board of Periodontology only if you have a US Perio certificate.
      2. I’m still considered a BDS because I haven’t gone through the Advanced Standing Programs to get the DDS/DMD certificates.
      3. I was fortunate to have my family support my education but you will find federal loans to be a good route compared to private loans. I will be writing a post on what to look for when applying for a student loan. Stay tuned!
      4. NBDE prep was harder before because it was scored and you had to get the maximum score. Now with it being pass/fail, I feel it’s less demanding. Not everyone may agree 😋 I’m writing a post soon about how to prep for it. Basically, dental decks and ASDA released papers were my primary sources. And I looked up stuff I didn’t know on google or textbooks.
      All the best!

      • Barbara Magalhaes says:

        Hello Dr. Meera!!!

I have a similar question to regarding to eligibility to Texas State licensure: I am a Brazilian dentist going through NBDE part 1 prep. I am not sure what to do, apply to IDP or to an Specilaty program. I´m a specilaist in Brazil in Implantology and Orthodontics. Do that counts somehow ? If i go through to a IDP, will i be eligible for Texas Dental lcense, or I´ll have to enroll in a Specialty program? I don´t mind having a limited license, as long as i am certified and ready to practice in US. Thank you very much for your support. I wrote an email couple of months ago, but didn´t hear from you.

        • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Sorry if I didn’t reply to you..I’ve been super busy lately.
It doesn’t matter which program you apply to (the important thing is to get into one) unless you specifically want to practice in a state that requires a DDS. Texas will accept both DDS and specialty. Your specialty from Brazil is added bonus but does not necessarily make it easier. There are a lot of foreign specialists with years of work experience/research/faculty practice that apply. Just concentrate on making your application the best and promoting your positives so you stand out in the competition.

  6. Marcia Berger says:

    Good evening Dr Meera,
It is very inspiring your blog. I was loosing my hope to be a dentist here in USA but reading your tips it made me dream again. I would like to make you a question about the NBDE , did you study by yourself ? Is there a course that you can take so they help you to score the test?
    Thank you very much

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Hi Marcia, I’m glad that the blog gave you hope! I did study for NBDE by myself, I prefer that but if you like to study with a partner, look in Facebook groups for NBDE prep and ask if there is anyone near you. You can also study with a partner in Skype/whatsapp. It helps you keep you accountable and there is less chance of you slacking. I will be writing a post soon on how to study for NBDE.
There are a couple of courses – I’m not sure how much you will need them. They were more relevant when NBDE was a scored exam and you had to get above 90 to have a chance into getting into a program. Now since the exam is pass/fail, it’s not that demanding. All the best!

      • Abbiramy Gopalakrishnan says:

Hi , I am Abbiramy and I am an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon from India. I married an engineer working in USA in 2018 and had to shift to US. I knew barely anybody in US to guide me on what to do next. I tried to find Indian dentists working in US on social media but they did not respond. Unfortunately my husband works for a bank in the country side where not much of Indians are there. Wil you be able to guide me on what I can do next? As you have mentioned in your blog I feel like I have to start everything from scratch.

    Dear Meera
Such a great web page with wealth of information. I graduated from India in 2004, cleared Australian Dental exams, practicing in Australia for the last 9 years.i did 1 year fellowship in implantology and currently doing Master’s programme for clinicians in implant dentistry from Melbourne university, want to move to US.. what’s the best path to choose?
All of my family members in US, I feel left out in Australia.. I

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

I can totally understand why you want to move to the US..but unfortunately the criteria is the steps are the same. My post http://www.foreigndentistinusa.com/roadmap-admission-us-dental-school/ explains the steps involved. Since you have family settled in the US, I’m guessing you already know which state you will want to practice in. Check out or contact the dental board in that state for the requirements to practice and plan accordingly. All the best!

      • Dheva says:

Thank you very much for your kind and detailed reply Meera. Yeah. My family living in Cali.i would love to do perio, esp I want to Persie my career as an implantologist. To study Masters in Periodontology, still do I have to study IDP for two years? Or can I apply directly for Periodontology? Thank you very much for your valuable time.

        • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

You can apply directly to Perio. Cali has 5 dental schools so go to town applying for them. You won’t be able to practice in Cali as soon as you graduate from Perio because California requires a DDS. But they do have reciprocity for dental licensure meaning after 5 years of work in another state, you can apply for Cali license. The way around that is, 2yrs of your specialty education is considered as work experience and make up the rest with working as full time faculty in any of the dental schools – full time faculty are allowed to practice in the faculty practice as school but you will not have a private license to work outside the school. Once 3yrs is done, you can apply for a regular Cali dental license 😊

          • Dheva says:

Thank you so much Meera. I can understand being a periodontist and spending time for unknown person to help means, it shows your kind heart and helping tendency!I have no words to thank you🙏🙏🙏🙏

Just wondering still I need to pass NBDE 1&2?

Also can I apply directly to each department? In respective university?

Thank you so much! May God bless you with loads of happiness!

            Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🎉🎊

            • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Nbde is still required but it is dependent on the individual program requirements..check the websites. You will still need to pass NBDE to apply for regional licensing exams once you are ready to graduate ( when you get into a program) so I would advise you to get it over with before you join. Whether you apply directly or through PASS will be mentioned on their websites.

              • Dheva says:

                Thank you so much Meera🙏
Sure , I’ll start preparing for board exams.Would you recommend any course to prepare for board exams?i have all the necessary stuff like first aid, dental decks, AsDA past papersetc. Since I m practising in Australia all 5 days, I feel like an online course would be better for me. I saw many.. but would you recommend any?

Your recommendation means a lot to me!

Thank you so much for your help Meera!

Planning to visit my family end of this year and may give Part-1.

                Thank you!

    • adc says:

But why would you want to leave Australia and move to the US? Isn’t being a dentist in Australia a good thing that pays well too? I would be really grateful if you were to share your thoughts on this as I am presently preparing for ADC exam. Thanks! 🙂

  8. PRERNA says:

thanks Meera mam its inspiring to hear from you. I am a MDS PERIODONTIST FROM India and husband a Pedodontist (Manipal) .we are wanting to immigrate to USA AND are presently looking through options of dentistry in Usa. we have come across AEGD (ADVANCED EDUCATION IN GENERAL DENTISTRY ) PROGRAMS WHICH ARE CODA APPROVED ADA RECOGNISED SPECIALITIES PREFERABLY IN STATES LIKE FL,IN,KY,OH,OR,VA,WA,WI .
we are planning that one of us prepare for DDS and the other who finds a correct program related to his /her specialty… get a license and start working.
    1)mam can you guide us.
2))MAM please if could suggest that as we both are specialist can we continue pursuing our specialities through any ada approved programs in Usa?how to go about finding a correct program.
2)also do you have any idea what is the pay scale for such programs ?
3)and also for AEGD DO WE NEED NBDE SCORES.?

    THANKYOU MAM.
HOPING TO GET A REPLY SOON.
    DR PRERNA

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

      1. As mentioned before, you can practice in the US if you get through any US-based CODA approved specialty – only thing is that your practice will be limited to certain states. In specialties, Perio might be a bit easier to get into than Pedo though the job market is better at the moment for Pedodontists. I would advise you to research different Universities/Specialties and where international dentists have been accepted before by asking in forums like SDN.
      2. Most programs (especially those open to taking international dentists) do not pay, they are tuition-based, meaning you pay them to learn (around 15,000 a quarter, so nearly $50-60,000/year).
      3. You will probably not need NBDE to apply for AEGD programs but you will need to complete the exam before graduating to be able to apply for the licensing clinical exam. So it will have to be done at some point.
      All the best!

      • PRERNA says:

thank you mam for your detailed and valuable reply.i will look into SDN forum .and mam for the licensing exam do they need fresh nbde scores or we can give the exam before entering that particular program .nbde scores valid for how long??
I am also looking into residency programs that accept foreign dentist only there acceptance rate is quite low.if any college or program you can suggest.it would be great help.

your blog is quite helpful for seeking information….thankyou so much.!!

        • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

As such there is no validity to the NBDE scores but the states you apply to may keep restrictions on the time lapses since the exam meaning when you apply to the particular states for licensure, they will specify that the NBDE scores be within 5-10 years.

    Dear dr Meera ,
It’s a very nice blog you have
I really appreciate the effort you are spending to look at massages and answears all questions
I am still doing well and happy with my job here In my country
And they are paying me quite well not much different with a junior dentist in America
Off course you have to add the expense of life in America
But due to family reasons I decided to move to the US !
I didn’t expect the requirement needed to work as a dentist in America
And as they said America recognize what’s in America only !
Well i am practicing as a general dentist in my country for almost 10 years now
Within the last 3 years i decided to focus more on dental implant
Something which I really like to do I attended many courses and workshop in Europe and assisted in many implant placement as well surgical like sinus lift and bone graft
Unfortunately I didn’t find any Coda accredited implant program in America
But still looking forward to be an implantologist ! Any how is there any possibility to limit my practice to Dental implant . I found some Implant program for 2 years but they are only ADA accredited or with awarded certificate . How can such degree help me in starting my career in America ?
I recently appliead to a one year program in implant for international dentist with an awarded certificate
Which might help me in the future in admission to other program in implant
Also I don’t mind working for few years outside Ohio
But in the long term I would like to settle down in the state of Ohio
    Thanking you
    Dr Sultan

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

There are no CODA approved implant programs because implant dentistry as such is not considered a recognized dental specialty. If you want to practice in the US, you need to go through a CODA approved dental program- either Advanced standing DDS, AEGD, GPR or specialty programs. Unfortunately there is no other shortcut.
I do know that Loma Linda had a 2 year implant certificate program that can result in a masters certificate (MS or MSD).
To practice in Ohio, you will need 2 year AEGD/GPR/DDS from a CODA approved dental program.
      All the best!

    Hi Meera!
I just graduated high school in California but had to move back to Spain due to my family not being able to afford U.S. universities. I will begin an undergraduate dentistry degree in Europe and I already want to go back to the US. I’ve been reading your posts to prepare early and know the steps i have to take in order to work in California.
As of right now i am searching for faster ways to be able to work in California, but I am confused whether a Specialty program or an IDP is a better way to go. Thoughts?
Hope to hear from you soon!

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

To work in California, you will need to do IDP. Specialty program will only let you apply for CA license by reciprocity, meaning you will need to work 3 yrs in another state with a valid dental license (altogether 5 yrs, 2yrs of specialty will be considered as work) before you can apply to CA.
      All the best!

    Hello Dr. Maveli,
This is Dr. Leena Menon from India, professionally a Pediatric dentist working in my own clinic and as a consultant in India. Your blog has come as a life saver, indeed, as there were multiple and more questions that got answered just by reading your blog with such precise links added. Thank you very much for that and it is really kind of you to have started this blog for the wellness of others
Doctor, i have come to a point that i have to move to the states. I will be grateful if i could get a word of opinion from you in regards to these set of queries:
    1) Any college you know of that provides GPR/ AEGD program without having to do DDS/ DMD? and the scope of practicing after completing the program? . I happened to connect to few colleges but they recommended the need for DDS
    2) Any exam to be given to enroll into a fellowship program? Can the delegate practice in the country after getting the fellowship? Fellowship program that you are aware of in regards to pediatric dentistry?
    3) Ways to get in a pedodontic residency in terms of exams ? What exactly does pedodontic residency mean or deliver the candidate? Does it give a valid degree to practice in the country?
    4) Can PhD be an option after having masters from India?
    5) Any other option that can be taken up which does not required DDS and that can let an Indian practice in the country (yes, certain states only since no DDS)
    6) Is there even a slightest advantage of having masters degree done from India, like in the application process for all of these mentioned above?
Also, Dr. Maveli we are keenly looking forward to your post on NBDE preparation

Once again, it is highly courteous of you to be taking out time from your schedule to help others in the best way possible.
May god bless you and your family

    Regards,
    DR. LEENA MENON

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

      Hi Dr. Leena,

Most of your questions are pretty much along the same line, so here’s the hard truth…
      1. There is no way to be eligible for a US dental license unless you complete a US CODA approved dental program (DDS/MS/AEGD/GPR).
      2. You can work as faculty in some dental schools but there is no common resource to find job openings that specifically allow foreign dentists to apply. You will have to go to individual school websites and ask if they will be open to you applying.
      3. I do not have any specific information on GPR/AEGD/Pedo programs that will accept international dentists. From my experience, they all have different requirements and some accept foreign dentists even if their websites say otherwise. Again, that is part of your research process.
      4. After completing a US Pedo specialty, you will be eligible for state licensure in certain states.
      5. PhD is an option, but not to practice as a dentist. Only to add to your resume while you are waiting to apply to the universities here.
      6. Masters from India may or may not make much of a difference in your application – every University values different things.
For the steps to take to start the process is explained in this blog post – http://www.foreigndentistinusa.com/roadmap-admission-us-dental-school/

      All the best!

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

No. The route to a US dental license is the same for any foreign dentist regardless of your educational or experience qualifications.

I think you working as a dental assistant while preparing to apply to schools is very good for your resume. Have you applied to schools already? Got any interview calls? You will need to narrow down which schools you like or think you have a better shot at before you do an externship. Some externship/observerships may have a tuition fee but will give you a certificate to show you have been there. Some externships allow you to see patients and is a sure fire way to get into that dental program. But you won’t know unless you narrow down what programs you are applying to and how you can increase your chances.
      All the best!

Hi Dr Meera. I came across your blog while searching for ways in which i can practice dentistry in USA. Luckily enough your blog was quite helpful, especially the Q and A. Im a Periodontist and my husband and i are planning to move to the USA for better opportunities. i have a few doubts regarding how to apply to the USA. I would like to continue working in the periodontics but i wouldn’t mind shifting my field or general dentistry, whichever easier.
    1. what are the speciality programs for periodontics ? and what is the cost?
    2. do i have to give my nbde exams in order to enroll for these programs?
    3. what type for visa should i be applying for?
    4. what is the approximate cost of doing a DDS ? and will it be a 2 year program for me since I’ve completed my MDS?
    Please guide me.

  16. Miliya Parveen says:

    Hi Dr.Meera,
I’m a little confused. Didn’t you have to give the nbde exams and complete training to get your dds before you could go for your speciality training?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

I gave the NBDE exams but applied/got accepted into a specialty program directly without doing the DDS. Not as easy to do, but a possibility.

Hey mam.. I am a BDS intern right now in India.
And want to look out for a dental job.. in USA .
Mam… What are the options / career choices that will help me to move to USA.?… respect mam.

  18. tsering says:

    Helo Dr Meera,
Could you share some insights on what dental quality assurance commision will look for in a candidate before providing him the license after doing 2 yrs of GPR or AEGD programs in state of Washington as per the requirements. I came to know that they need to approve my non accredited dental school . Would you mind elaborating in this matter and how this works.
    Best regards,
    Tsering

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

I don’t think that will affect you. The state will have criteria that need to be met to ensure standards are similar in the dental programs from different schools. That is not something you can have any control over – you will have to apply for the license and hope that the Board approves (mostly they do). The state of Washington has changed it’s requirements since July 2018 – CODA approved programs are a must from then on.

  19. Sonia says:

    Hi Meera,
Im very confused between a DDS/MS. Im from India and looking to study in the states. But I’ve gotten mixed reviews about the job opportunities and working constraints for MS. I’m more inclined for an MS since im already a BDS, but I’ve heard the restrictions on the states makes job opportunities difficult. Can you please throw some more light on the future after an MS and what exactly are the rules for practicing. Also, is a DDS better if I want a guaranteed job once im out of dental school ?
    Thankyou

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

It will be slightly easier to get into a 2-year international program for the DDS than getting into a masters program. With only an MS, you are restricted to certain states. That is why where you want to practice is important – if you have a preference in practice in a particular state, make sure you look at the requirements for that state. So getting a DDS will cover all your bases.

    Hi Dr. Naveli
I have completed my MDS in periodontics from Chennai, India. I wud like to practice in USA as a dentist and Wot wud be the best way u suggest for me to go in? I mean one of my Frnd suggested to DDS after nbde. The other asked me to do a course in perio. But am all confused. Wot do u think is the best as I wud want to take my 6 yrs old kid also along with me as an a single mother,.kindly help me to take a decision. Is loan facility available for the fees or do we have to arrange for all the fee?
    Thank you

  21. Dr. Prerana says:

    Hi Dr. Meera!
I really appreciate your blog, it has helped solve most of my doubts about studying dentistry in the US.
I completed my BDS last year from Nair hospital, Mumbai. I am now considering studying further in the US. Will doing a fellowship before applying for DDS help my CV? I am also considering MPH as I thought it is a good option to fall back on Incase I don’t get accepted for DDS immidiately. Which if the two, if at all, will help make my application stronger?
    Regards,
    Dr. Prerana

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Either will help but I would think since the fellowship gives you clinical experience, it might give you a slight advantage. I would still advise you to apply as soon as you complete you NBDE, TOEFL exams since you may just get called for interviews without any further education.

  22. Manjari Dixit says:

    Hello!
This is a really nice initiative! I am a dentist in India. I wanted to know if there are easier ways to get into the system which are cheaper and more feasible.
Are there certificate or master programs that can lead me into the academic line of dentistry, in the US, and provide a decent job?
I have read about many programs over the internet. But the more a read the more confused I get.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Lots of dental schools will accept foreign dentists as faculty without further US dental education. But you will need to contact the Universities directly as they do not advertise this possibility. If you are full-time faculty, you may be able to even practice on patients in the faculty practice clinic. This will only offer a limited faculty license that limits you to the university, you won’t be able to practice privately. Then there is also the option of teaching in dental assisting schools and dental hygiene schools.

  23. Nishant LAKHANI says:

    Hello mam,
I am also from india and have been applying since last 2 cycles. But every time I was put on a waiting list. So I got so disappointed that I didn’t apply for the third cycle but now I am considering to apply soon. Currently my profile is I have a G.P.A of 3.5. I have also done MPH from Australia and have a gap of almost 2.5 in that. Toefl score of 104.
I have been applying for advanced standing program but this year I will also apply for post graduation program like in prostho and all plus some residency courses like in restorative and other resident programs. But mam I have a question after passing the programs like I want to do either Endodontics or Prosthodontics’s speciality courses. I have heard from people that they don’t allow you to practice as you can’t apply for certification in that. Something like that. Is that true mam? What do you suggest for me?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

I didn’t really understand your question. Both Prostho and Endo are CODA approved specialties that are accepted by those states that accept foreign dentists with specialty education.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Scholarships are not available for non citizens…unless they are available through your embassy or cultural organizations. You can apply to PG programs that have a history of accepting foreign dentists – it will usually be specified in their website or you can email/call them to find out directly.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

You either apply to get into an international dental program that equalizes your BDS to an American DDS or apply to specialty programs that accept foreign dental students. You will be able to practice in only certain states if you choose the specialty route. I would advise you to get going step by step to get your paperwork ready to apply starting with writing the exams required and processing your ECE scores. Please go through my posts on the blog for more info – I’ve detailed it step by step..

        Hello Dr Meera
This Post has helped me a lot, i really appreciate your time

My Name is Evelyn and I am from Mexico.
I’ve done with NBDE Part I and II already . I’ll be applying next cycle to a Periodontic Program but my goal is end it up working on California . I have doing all the research for California Board requierements, and i understand that i can get a Licensure by Reciprocity if i work 5 years in a different state that accept Specialties, but i still have the following questions

        1) If a Apply to a specialty program on CA, in this case , the Perio program that last 3 years, do I have to make up the rest 2 years, or still 3 Years in a different State?

        2) if a Apply to a specialty program on CA, Do Board OF California count those years of specialty or do I still have to make up the rest 5 years in a different state in order to them to accept me to Apply the Licensure of reciprocity ?
I mean, does it matter in what state I do the specialty program or Either state they count me those years ?

I hope I have made my self clear

Looking forward for your answer. Thank you in advance.

        • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

          Hi Evelyn,
It doesn’t matter where you do your Perio residency – two years of the residency can be used towards your 5yrs requirement.

“Proof that the applicant has either been in active clinical practice or has been a full-time faculty member in an accredited dental education program and in active clinical practice for a total of at least 5,000 hours in five of the seven consecutive years immediately preceding the date of his or her application.

Residency – Maximum of two (2) years of clinical practice credit allowed for a residency training program accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation

With two years of clinical practice, or a completed residency, the remainder of the 5-year requirement may be fulfilled with a contract to teach or to practice in settings specified in Business and Professions Code, Sections 1635.5(a)(3)(B) and 1635.5(a)(3)(C).”

    Hi Meera,

I’ve read all your blog posts – great information. Looking to pursue Perio at TX.

    Had a few questions:
    • What resources did you use to prepare NDBE 1 and 2? I’m still waiting for your post on it.
    • Some universities require me to do the Graduate Record Examination – any resources to help prepare for that?
    • After we graduate from the speciality program, we have to take a regional clinical examining board exam – which one did you take? Do we still need to do operative/endo/pros components even though we specialise as perio?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Sorry about taking so long to get around to it. I’m due to give birth any moment now so the blog is not on the forefront of my priorities unfortunately. I will get around to it as soon as I can though!
In a gist – NBDE prep was mainly dental decks and GRE prep was mainly from Barron’s GRE book.
We have to do all the components of he clinical licensing exam – it’s not specialty based. Though in some states (eg: Oregon), if you are practicing after getting only your specialty (without DDS), they do have an additional clinical exam that is specialty based.

  31. Dr Tanvi P says:

Hello ma’am, I m Dr Tanvi , I completed my MDS in Periodontics this year in India. Can M.S oral biology or a Phd programme in the U.S be taken up if I have to move to U.S after my marriage n settle there? What would be the scope for such fields in the U.S.A after completion of M.S or a Phd programme? Or can u suggest any programme which would be of use to do after doing MDS periodontology in India?? Coz I don’t want to waste whatever I have learned about perio during my post graduation.. It would be of great help if u guide me with this!! Thankyou

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

You could try applying to Perio programs in the US. While you are applying, you could join the other programs you mentioned and study side by side. If you want to be on the clinical side of dentistry, you will need to go through a clinical dental program. Otherwise, Ph.D. programs would be great in research/faculty/administrative job applications within dental schools.

      • Tanvi P says:

Thankyou so much ma’am…What would be the prospects for M.S oral biology ? Would there be enough job apportunities after completing it?

  32. Archana Dubey says:

    Hi
My name is Archana, I have been working in India after finishing my MDS in Prosthodontics. As I look forward to moving to states after marriage, would you advise me if I should pursue dds or go for masters in Prosthodontics again. If I do dds, will that again allow me to practice Prosthodontics in USA? Will there be a difference in salary of a DDS and an MSD in states. Any advise would be appreciated 🙂

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Pros is worth it only if you are going to put up your own clinic which you can do once you get your green card. But otherwise going through the DDS program is better.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

DDS will be easier to get into because there are more seats. Specialists normally can charge higher and insurance reimburses them higher fees as well. But Prosthodontists are not given Specialist status with dental insurances and so you will only be able to collect general dental fees for the procedures anyway. This is probably because the insurance codes used are the same for the prosthodontist and the DDS. That’s just the hard truth – It was a shock when I learned about it too.

  34. Vicha says:

Hi, I graduated with BDS in China and currently in my second year residency, but I’m considering to go for the Advanced standing programs. So i have a few questions
    – will completing a residency program actually bump up my resume for dental school admissions? Or a externship/shadow/dental assistant experience in US give me more advantage
    – if dental experiences in US is better, would dropping out of my current residency right now to pursue the chance for US experience ‘downgrade’ me to the eyes of the admissions office?
    – is there a maximum time gap that you have to take the NBDE Part 2 exam after passing part 1?
    – what kind of visa can I apply to go to US to take the nbde exam? Can I use a tourist visa?
    Thanks a lot!

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

      – US experience is always valued but you must be ready to provide a good explanation for dropping out of a program in your native country. Programs don’t necessarily make it known what they are looking for in a candidate so it is hard to judge what will hold more weightage. What one program holds valuable is not even considered by another program so you cannot go by that.
      – You can schedule NBDE part 2 once you get your results for Part 1 (about 4-6 weeks after the exam)
      – You can use a visitor/tourist visa (B1) to write the exam. When you apply/go for the US visa interview, make sure you let them know this exam can be written only in the US. Have a scheduled date for the exam as well and a provisional plane ticket (with a return date).

We are working on him moving here. So I’ve been googling and reading a lot about what he can do once here and before reading your blog I assumed the only option was giving the NBDE and going for the advanced program. I do not have any family in the US so I am very lost and confused with this whole thing. I have too many questions which after reading your entire blog, I believe you can help me out with. Would it be possible to meet with you in person? Or maybe have a conversation over the phone? I understand its too much to ask for. But at the moment you seem like my only hope! Thank you

    Dear Dr. Meera,
Thank you so much for sharing your inspiring story and creating this useful blog, really appreciate it.
My name is Lwin, a BDS dentist from overseas who live in USA. I became a US citizen this year and am currently a registered dental hygienist in Florida. I’m planing for Master in Orthodontist, whichever state or university is accepted I will go. I would like to know which states accept Specialist registration after completion of 2 years master program in US? does NBDE is compulsory when I apply for the programs? My dean from overseas only issued the letter of recommendation instead of online evaluation form and is it good enough? should I complete diploma or residency before master for better chance of intake ? any suggestion about which University or states have more chance someone like me to get into the program asap?
Thank you so much in advance for your answer.
    With Sincere respect,

    Lwin

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Unfortunately Lwin, I’m not sure which ortho programs take foreign dentists directly. I would advise you to send emails to ortho programs with your resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in the ortho program and ask if they will consider you for the program without a DDS.
http://www.foreigndentistinusa.com/foreign-trained-dentist-practice-usa/ will give you information on which states you can apply to after specialty degree (there are a few changes to Illinois that I will update soon).
Most admission processes have an online recommendation section but you can call the university and explain your dilemma to them.

I have completed MDS ( Pedodontics) in Chennai, India.. I have 13 publications.. I wanted to settle in USA in buffalo, New York state.. what is the procedure to pursue my education and practice as pedodontist in USA.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Unfortunately you will have to start again – write the NBDE, TOEFL, get ECE and apply to advanced standing programs/ specialties to get a US degree. Directly applying to Pedo programs is a possibility though I think it’s one of the specialties that don’t take foreign dentists directly (without US DDS) – you will have to contact programs directly and find out.

  44. Ali says:

I wanted to know estimate costs for doing 2 year masters program along with expenses for giving nbde exams?
Does the stipend paid during masters course suffice rents and living expenses in states?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

It can vary between 30,000 to 55,000 per year and depends on whether it is a private/state school and if you are a resident of the state in which the university is located (resident fees). Also possible scholarships/grants (not commonly available to foreign dentists who are on an F1/student visa). Stipends are rare and usually only in the state schools (which are harder to get into for foreign dentists) and just barely cover tuition fees.

  45. Sujika tamang says:

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Yes you can do specialty directly but you can only get licensed in certain states that accept foreign dentists without DDS. Some dental specialty programs will accept foreign dentists without going through a DDS program but there is no list for these kind of programs. You will have to call or email the program directly.

Everything you mentioned will help. Regarding malpractice insurance and immunization, contact the program directly and ask what to do about it. Unless you are treating patients, I don’t think you need malpractice insurance and immunizations can be taken in the university itself.
Shadowing a local dentist and getting a recommendation from him would help as well.

  52. Rupika says:

Please let me know that after completing BDS from India you did 6month externship from this university and you were able to practice in US . You did not do or completed any course of post-graduation for practing there .
I really want to practice in US and I m really keen to know your journey , please do answer. 😊

  54. Nikitha Sukesh says:

    Hi,
A big heartfelt thanks…U have solved half of my doubts..but I would like to know with MS specialty are you allowed to work as a specialist or restricted to faculty in some university? have come across anyone getting sponsored H1b visa for the same?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

With specialty you are eligible to apply for licensure in certain states and work in private practice once you get the license. If you get a job offer, then the employer must sponsor you for a work visa.

  55. Deepthi kannam says:

    Hello Dr. Meera
I Deepthi kannam… completed my MDS in PERIODONTICS… from india.. currently residing in TEXAS… i would like to work here… im intrested in doing any certified courses on IMPLANT DENTISTRY… so wnated ur guidance in the same.. is there any way so that i can do any course and work here…. and im on my H4 visa doctor…
I would be great if u can guide me… TIA 😊

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Implant dentistry is not a recognized specialty and therefore will not allow you to practice in the States.
You can study under H4 but some universities may require you to switch to F1 student visa if you are accepted into a program.

  57. Divya Das says:

Hello mam, you have mentioned about 6months externship . What are the eligibility criteria to join for externship after BDS?

  58. Felix says:

Hello Dr. Meera, How are you?

Understood everything about, how to get licensed and work as a dentist on the USA. And all the requirimentes that i need.
And for the moment im interested to take a specialty dental program and work on Texas.
But i have a doubt about the job seeking. According to the dental board In Texas you can get a licensed with a Dental specialty certificate or Master from a CODA program.
But when i investigate on the internet for dental jobs in Texas; i see one of the requirements they ask: “DDS/DMD from a dental education program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation” “The rest are providing Residency certificate, License and CPR”
-Questions: 1- Having the License in Texas from a Specialty program and not DDS/DMD,can be hard or troublesome get a dental job?
2-A foreign dentist who have a License in Texas from a Specialty program can work as a General Dentist too? (let say in this case an Orthodontist, Prothodontist or someone with dental public health)
Thank you very much. I hope you have a nice day.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Jobs can ask for US DDS as a requirement, nothing can be done about that.
You can practice general dentistry with a specialist degree – Texas only has general dental licenses so everything can be practiced.

  59. Preeti says:

Hi, Dr Meera . I must say what a great initiative to guide foreign trained dentist.
I have completed my MDS in Periodontology and Implantology in a year 2012. Then I have worked as a Lecturer for 4 years in India and currently I am doing private practice in gulf since last two years . I wish to do Periodontic Residency programme in the USA which will give me status of American Board Certified Periodontist which will be helpful to pursue better carrier in Gulf or other south east asian countries. I don’t wish to immigrate to USA but want to do residency programme. Kindly guide me how I should proceed and whats the eligibility criteria to get accepted in residency programme.
    Thank you.
    Best Regards.

  60. Christina says:

    Hi Dr. Meera.
Similar situation. Finished my dentistry and currently reside in Oklahoma with a PR.
Would a two year aegd program be enough to be eligible to take the Texas licensing exam. ?
Also the university of Florida asks a fee of 18,000 for the aegd program. I though most grant us a stipend. .…

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Texas does not approve AEGD or GPR programs for foreign dentists licensure. These programs don’t always give stipends, it varies from program to program.

      • Garima says:

        Hi Dr Meera,
If i get into 2 yr AEGD program and work as a dentist in the states that allow AEGD graduate to have a dental license. And is it true that after working as a dentist for three years in those states i can apply for california license exam with 3 years work experience?

  61. Shagun says:

    Hi Dr. Meera,
Thank you for starting this blog. It’s a boon for people like me who are seeking admission in the USA.
I’m Dr. Shagun Modi currently working in Mumbai and applying for a Prosthodontics program in the US. I had the following doubts:

    1) What is the difference between a MS/MSD program and a certificate program? Since I came across a lot of universities that only offer a certificate in Prosthdontics and not a MS degree.

    2) Does only doing a certificate program have fewer opportunities in future than doing a MS degree programme?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Specialty programs can end in three routes – 1. certificate of completion (which confers you the specialty but no title – meaning you can advertise as a specialist but you will not have a suffix like MS or MSD after your DDS.
      2. MSD is Master of Science in Dentistry degree that you will be conferred if you do research and submit your research as a publishable paper – article need not be published to get the MSD
      3. MS is Master of Science where your research must end in a thesis presentation and possibly a publishable paper (need not be published)
MS track may require more paperwork and a full thesis presentation in front of a board/peers but in the end they both are technically similar. MS may hold a little more preference if you are seeking to go the educational/administrator route in a dental school.

  62. Dr. A says:

Hello meera, congratulations on your wonderful journey. I have a MDS degree from india in OMFSand a DDS from US. I am in private practice currently and want to do more. Can I do any specialization , I don’t wish to go through 4 year OMFS degree.
    Thank you

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

You can do any specialty..you are already eligible for licensure anywhere in the states because of your DDS so there are no restrictions.

  63. Debora says:

Hi Meera. What a wonderful story to share! thank you for taking your precious time to sharing it with us. I have just moved to US. I am an Orthodontist. From Brasil. Graduated in 2009. struggling like you did in the very beginning. Maybe a little bit more, since I have a 2 year old at home. I wake up and go to sleep everyday thinking, planning, reading, talking about my career. Thats is my passion. Thats what I have done my entire life. That what I choose to be 10 years ago. And now, I feel I have to start all over again. Study for the board exams, go to school, make loans again…. It’s frustrating, but life in Brasil was not very easy too, so Lets keep on moving on…. Unfortunately I am the only dentist in the family. I wish I could have someone like you to talk to. Ask for some advise. But reading your story, and see that you did it, makes me feel stronger. More confident. once again, thanks for sharing your story.

  64. Mahnoor Rehman says:

Thank you so much for this amazing story Dr Mira.
I just wanted to make one thing clear. Did you move to USA after taking your NBDE exam or you immigrated and started externship right away? I just want to know if one has to take NBDE and TOEFL before immigration or not.
    Thank you so much!!

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

So you can take the NBDE (now INBDE) only while in the US. So I was doing the externship while preparing for the exams. You will need to come on a B1 visitor visa/H4 dependent visa or F1 student visa to write the exam.

  65. Sumnima says:

Hi ma’am . I have done my specialization in public health dentistry .How can I apply to practice in USA without doing NBDA

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

NBDE is to qualify for the regional clinical exam like the WREB OR NERB, I don’t think you can get licensed without it.

  66. Dr Urmi Tripathi says:

    Hi, Meera

Thats a big struggle you have gone through.
Even i am indian Periodontist. Now i am preparing for NBDE part 1 & Part 2. But thing is I am all new to this United States. Now that i have decided that i want to stay in My field only i want have started strugling for it.. Thing is its bit difficult to manage NBDE Exam preps and home responsibilities but i am trying my best. But after doing DDS i want to pursue my career in Teaching as i used to teach earlier in India being as associate Professor. So i cant sit at home and be housewife. Can you please throw somelight regarding future career options after DDS that i can have balanced Life along playing role of mother, Wife and dentist..

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

It will be hard especially since finding house help is hard/expensive. So that means kids and housework as still your responsibility while you are working. Thankfully, most husbands will help in this situation and you will find some balance. It will not be perfect but it will work for you.

You can do masters directly and work in certain states. If you want to be able to work anywhere in the US..you will have to do DDS. Ortho is good but a lot of general dentists are now doing Invisalign sort of courses so there is competition. Pros is great if you want to put up your own clinic (once you get your green card) but otherwise insurance doesn’t given pros specialty fees meaning a general dentist/prosthodontist will get the same compensation for a crown or extraction vs any other specialty for the same procedure.

  70. Muktai Deshpande says:

    Dear doctor,
It’s great to see someone put so much effort into helping other aspirant international dentists. It’s really amazing, your blog.
I’m an Indian dentist who has just finished my BDS. I want to pursue post-graduation in the USA rather than repeating two years of dental education (DDS) . My question is after nbde part1&2 and getting admission into a residency program, can you work beyond the hospital you work in? As in, can you work in a private clinic as a consultant? I would love you hear from you. It’s amazing how passionate you are about spreading your knowledge and helping so many aspirants. Thank-you so much for this.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

It depends on the state you apply to..after post grad without US DDS..only some states will allow you to work in private practice. How you work will also depend on your immigration status…most specialists work as independent contractors but you can do that only if you have a green card or citizenship. If you will be applying for a work visa, you will have to find an employer to hire you as an employee.

  71. Ruy says:

I wonder how can all afford the tuition of US programs. I am considering to apply for an MBA first, get a job anywhere (shadow a dentist in the meanwhile), save some money and then apply for a dental program. It is impossible in my country to get a scholarship for dental or medical post-degrees. Thank you for sharing your experience!

    Greetings from Mexico.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Everyone applies for private student loans. You will need a Green card holder/US citizen to co-sign the loan with you and an acceptance letter from a US University.

Is tat dds is the only way that I can practice dentistry in USA or by doing any certificate courses in specialities makes me to practice in USA?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

CODA approved DDS or Specialty programs are accepted for licensure. Only certain states will open up after specialty. It is important to know which states those are and which specialities they accept. Please look at individual state board websites to confirm the information.

    Hello mam.
Thank you for coming up with such a beautiful blog. I am an MDS in orthodontics from India.I shall be moving to US after my marriage soon. We are planning to settle in Seattle,WA and since I do not wish to stay separate from my husband,my options are limited. Is it wise to apply for an MS orthodontics? Which are the states that allow practise aftr MS?

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Ortho is a very competitive field and they usually consider only US DDS holders. You can try but you will have more success after getting a US DDS. You could try to get a teaching position and work in the University or do a 2 yr CODA approved implant program that will let you get licensed in Washington.

    • Dr Meenakshi says:

Hi Tulika.. This is Dr Meenakshi.. I am sailing in the same position as yours.. I am an endodontist.. Have you figured out any way.. What are you doing now.. Am also in Seattle.

    Hello Dr Meera,
I am a practicing General Dentist from Mumbai, India.
My son has just enrolled for his eleventh grade in a Canadian high school. He desires to pursue dentistry as his future career in Canada or USA. Will he get admission in Dental schools as an International student after his schooling as he is on study visa or will he have to wait for his PR.
Request your guidance for the process.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

For the US, he will need to first complete 4yrs of University before being eligible to take the DAT exam (entrance exam for the conventional program in dental schools). If he gets accepted into a program (college/dental school), he can study under student visa.
I don’t have any information about how it is in Canada.

    Hi Meera,
First of all, thank you so much for your good thought to help others bysharing your experience.
It means a lot. May God reward you immensely for this kindness.
Coming to my story! I am also a dentist from.india who is settled here in Minnesota with family after my marriage. I cleared my NBDE part 1 and 2. So my question is regarding getting into specialization program and receiving Masters degree. UMN has one residency program on orofacial pain. So how can we find out if we could practice once we graduate. They say it is CODA accredited.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

It depends on which state you want to practice in – the board website will give you the list of specialties they accept. Proceed accordingly. All the best!

  91. Paro says:

Hi , I’m a foreign graduate dentist. Cleared my NBDE in 2003 and then my RT exam in 2007.I couldn’t take the licensing exam because of my family commitments. I want to take the licensing exam now and practice in California. Can I take the exam with my old NBDE score. I’ll highly appreciate,If you could Please give an input on that .
    Thanks

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

I think Universities typically ask for scores within the last 5yrs. Next yr the NBDE is becoming one exam INBDE – you may have to take that.

Madam I am in chennai India.i am 49 year old.i have BDS degree from chennai.i worked 15 years in saudi as a general dentist .now I lost my job due to Saudi nationalisation.
Since the scope of dentistry is much questionable and income is meagre I like to pursue dentistry in USA.
Do you think at this age planing to study dentistry in USA is worth decision.and also how to appear
NBDE part 1 and part 2 exam in USA.

Pl give me a reply. Thanks and regards
    Dr anne

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Unfortunately your degree or experience does not allow you to practice in the US without going through an international DDS program. The decision to move and take 1-2yrs to pass the exams, apply to schools, get interviews and repeat this until you get into a program is based on your family and financial condition. In the US, people switch careers at any age and so there are people of all ages trying to be a dentist in the USA. It is totally dependent on your drive and realistic expectations of how much time, money and effort you want to put into it to be able to work another 10-15 yrs.

I am looking for a short term course/fellowship of maybe maximum 1 year duration as we are planning to go back to India after 3-4 years. Please guide about the dental related opportunities in US especially Atlanta area if you are aware.

      Hi Sreelakshmi,
      You’re from my Alma Mater!!
I don’t know about Atlanta but Loma Linda University does 1 year Implant Fellowship courses for foreign specialists. Look for implant based courses – Perio is a great specialty to do implants.
There are separate institutions like the Misch Institute that do short term implant courses too. Do your research and get a US implant certificate so that you can start placing implants when you get back.

      • Dr Meenakshi says:

Hi Sreelakshmi.. This is Dr Meenakshi. I am an endodontist and shifted to Seattle recently. Did you find out any short term courses / fellowships .. Your reply would really help me a lot as am also planning to return back to India in two years.. thanks

OMFS is almost impossible to get through without a DDS – apply for an international DDS program and then apply for OMFS to increase your chances.

  98. Victor says:

Thank you for the blog, it’s been helping me out so much!

One question that I haven’t really seen anyone talk about, is it worth getting any specialization (like Endodontics, for example) before moving to the US? I am a US citizen, however I grew up in Brazil, and am currently in my 9th semester in college. I want to go to the US and begin the ADEA CAAPID process as soon as I’m out of college, but I’d like to know if it would make said process easier if I stay in Brazil for a bit longer and get a specialization first . Thanks again for the blog!

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Don’t waste time if working in US is your final goal. Just come here – clear all the exams and start applying..in the meantime, shadow, do externships, work as a dental assistant/research asssitant etc until you get in.

  99. VISHAL PAT says:

    Hello, Dr. Meera Maveli.
I must thank you for the wonderful blog.

I am a DDS practising in Canada. I am interested in a Pediatric dentistry residency in the USA.
1- I need your guidance for selecting the Pediatric residency program? I know I can see them from the AAPD website but need someone who had chosen this path and how to choose them.
2- How to improve your chances of getting into the program?
3- Is it a good idea to add my part 1 and part 2 exam dates and clearance with 1st attempt in my CV?
4- How should I prepare for the pediatric residency interview?

    Your input is valuable.

    Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely.
    VP.

    • foreigndentistinusa@gmail.com says:

Make sure your SOP stands out and is done well. Having your NBDE dates or attempts is fine but will not really set you apart. If you can do Pediatric preceptorship or externships/shadow in a US pediatric clinic with a good recommendation from the dentist will be a good resume builder.
You are still considered as a foreign graduate if you practicing in Canada via clearing exams. Check on program websites to see which Pediatric programs accept foreign graduates. I think U of Connecticut, Rutgers and Perto Rico do..

Right now we are limited by the fact that we don’t have a green card yet, so legally we cannot run our own clinic. This is why immigration status is a very important factor in how you practice in the USA.

Hello Meera and everyone else! Thank you for the great read and sharing your personal journey! My name is Unee and I am the manager for a handful of small neighborhood dental clinics in Michigan. We have worked with several international dentists in the past and are currently working with 3. It is great to see their enthusiasm in coming to work everyday as a dental assistant while continuing to pursue their education. I witness the balance and discipline of international graduated daily! For that, I am always ready to hire a foreign trained dentist as a dental assistant whenever I meet one who is looking to work towards their re-certification. If you or somebody you know living in Michigan or thinking of moving to Michigan are interested, you can reach me directly at baigdental@gmail.com!

    Hi meera ,

I’m a foreign-trained orthodontis . I’m interested in applying to the orthodontics program to become an orthodontist in the USA. Im planning to stay in the USA after getting my degree. I passed Nbde part 1 and 2. Where do I need to send my specialty degree for qualification? Can I apply directly to the universities or it has to be through Adea Pass only? which universities accept foreign-trained specialists to apply for residency? Can I apply to adea cappid and adea pass at the same time?

    Thank you for your time

Hi Dr. Maveli. THANK YOU for your kindness in sharing your wealth of information! You are a breath of hope!
I have read through the majority of this thread to find a situation similar to mine to avoid repeating any inquiries.
I am a foreign-trained dentist, currently practicing in CA for 19 years as a GP. ( I was blessed to pass the Bench Exam for foreign-trained dentists to practice in California, before the California Board of Dentistry removed that option in the early 2000’s). My question is, would you be able to enlighten me on whether or not I can apply to practice dentistry in WA or TX?
I truly appreciate your time and effort.
Again, thank you for sharing your experience and vast knowledge in sorting through these challenges! May you be blessed ten-fold for your efforts.

Hi Dr.Meera, thank you so much for this platform you have initiated to answer questions to queries of foreign-trained dentists like me who come into the country. I am a new US immigrant and have been a practicing periodontist in Abu Dhabi for the past 24 years. Currently, I am stationed in North Carolina and would like to take up employment as a dental assistant for the interim period until I get my credentials to be licensed as a dentist. I would like to know the requirements to work as a DA. Is registration as a DA a must for employment? If registration is required what would a good online training recommended?

Hi Dr. Maveli. I am a dentist graduated in India in 2007. I have been in NY working as a dental assistant since 2010. Due to financial problems and with family, I was unable to pursue school to become a dentist in US. For me to work as a dentist, even if its been 13 years, should I still apply for INDBE and go through 2 years of AEGD program to practice in USA? Or are there any other sates where they will accept BDS.
